Depression is a condition that affects millions of people, and can be quite debilitating. Everyone has episodes of sadness and feeling down from time to time, but depression goes beyond this. Those who have prolonged episodes of hopelessness, feeling alone, low self-esteem or lack of interest may be suffering from clinical depression, which must be treated. Here are a few ways to treat – or prevent – depression.

What Causes Depression?

There are a few theories about what exactly causes one to become depressed. The main theory suggests that there is an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the individual, such as epinephrine, serotonin, dopamine and gamma-aminobutyric. Many medications or anti-depressants out there have been formulated to correct this imbalance.

Other theories state that depression is a direct symptom of a devastating event, such as the loss of a loved one, serious financial distress, or divorce. This aggression is then turned inward by the person, causing them to become depressed. Other theories even suggest that depression can be caused by a pattern of helplessness as a learned behaviour, or from lowered/elevated activity in certain parts of the brain.

CONNECT
Make constant connections with other people. The nature of a depressed person is to avoid interaction-however, humans are social and must make daily connections to thrive. Start a friendly conversation with a greeter at your local store. Call your mom and talk about your plans for Thanksgiving. Ask the neighbor about current politics. Do whatever it takes to keep talking, and keep connecting.

PRIORITIZE YOU
Each day, make it a priority to devote some time to YOUR OWN emotional health. Your mind needs “fine-tuning” and upkeep, much like your car. Most of us will jump through hoops to make others feel happy. Make a point to do the same for YOURSELF, at least once each day. Do you like bubble baths? Do nature walks make you feel calmer? Your brain is an organ. Like the rest of your body, your brain benefits from exercise and your brain will thrive on rest. Many activities we consider “luxury” are actually the things that keep our brains healthy. For example, don’t EVER hesitate to SIT ALONE read a book. Try reading a book about mental health. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER when it comes to depression. Learn everything you can about yourself and your options for healing. Join a support group or call up a friend that might relate to your fight against depression. Taking the time to learn how to fight is NOT A LUXURY. Try this right now: Think of the person in this world that needs you most. What would you do to help them if they were suffering from depression?…now duplicate that energy and GIVE IT TO YOURSELF!

Many American women suffer from depression – approximately 12 million. A lot of these women don’t get any relief from their symptoms because they don’t know the real cause of the depression. We’re going to examine some surprising causes of depression and how to overcome them.

* Lack of green vegetables. You now know one of the reasons that your mother told you to eat your vegetables. Green vegetables are rich in a B vitamin called folate that can kick-start the production a-serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a potent antidepressant. If you can eat one cup of spinach or broccoli (both rich in folate) each day, experts say that you can cut your risk of depression in half.
* Overload of stress. Stress, even mild stress, can increase your risk of becoming depressed by 30%. If you are stressed over a lengthy amount of time, stress hormones can sap the brain’s ability to make endorphines, which make you feel happy. New research has recently revealed that spending 10 minutes per day on something that makes you feel good can give your mind a break and cut the cycle of stress overload.

There are times in just about everyone’s life when the question, “Am I suffering from depression?” emerges. The mere fact that you are asking yourself this question though isn’t necessarily a reason to seek out a prescription for an antidepressant.

Clinical depression can be distinguished from simply feeling unhappy or out of sorts. There are certain objectively identifiable symptoms that come forward when a person is clinically depressed:

How badly and continually has your mood changed your sleep patterns? Are you suffering from insomnia or are you forever sleeping?

Do things that you once liked – counting your family and friends – no longer bring you any pleasure?

Are you touchy and cantankerous, flared into argument with hardly any provokation?

Do you have frequent thoughts of death or suicide. Do these often become devastating and all-consuming?

Antidepressants are the drugs or medicines that are used in curing the disorders of depression. It is generally believed that depression occurs only to the adults but that is not always true. Depression is also observed in children. There are a number of small children who suffer from depression and are prescribed by the doctor to intake the antidepressant medicines.

When antidepressants are taken they increase the chemical activity in the brain, especially the neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters are responsible for passing the signal from one brain cell to another. Thus the use of antidepressants can help the person to come out of depression.

One thing should be very clear about the actual status of one’s child, when they are to be given, the antidepressants. This is because they are not the normal form of medicines. These are to be taken only when prescribed by the doctor. There are some effects resulting from the intake of these antidepressants in the children. Some of these include the suicidal thinking in small children. But there are no any cases noted yet.

It is not that the antidepressants cannot be used to treat children. In fact there are a number of children who have cherished the advantages of these medicines. Also it can happen that if the disorder is not taken seriously in case of small children than they won’t be able to live a happy life.
